Continuation of IYWE

Last post we saw about verbs and nouns or pronouns. In this post we'll see clauses and relative pronouns in detail.

Clauses
A sentence that contains noun or pronoun and one finite verb.

*Conjunctions
Conjunctions are the words which link two parts of the sentence together. If more that one finite verb in a sentence, a conjunction is usually used.

EX: She was late for work she missed the train

After using conjunction the above sentence is
She missed the train so she was late for work.or She was late for work because she missed the train.

Conjunctions can be put at the beginning of a sentence also

Because she missed the train, she was late for work. If a conjunction is used at beginning it must be followed by two clauses with comma btw them.

EX: When her daughter came to stay, she put flowers in the spare room.

'AND' and 'BUT' should not be used at start of sentence.

EX: I waited for two hours but she did not come.
'OR' can also be used between two sentences.

Relative Pronouns

It's similar to function to conjuctions. They link dependent clauses to main clause and usually follow a noun.

They are the same words like interrogative pronouns:

EX: The house, which had once been beautiful, was now a ruin.

Other relative pronouns are: who, whose, whom, which, that. That can be either conjunction or a relative pronoun. It depends on how it's used.

See ya in next post. Happy reading!
